Apicoectomy

When a root canal isn’t enough, this small procedure can help save your tooth.

When surgery is the best next step

Most root canals heal well and allow you to keep your natural tooth for years. In some cases, however, infection or symptoms can persist—even after treatment. When that happens, an apicoectomy may be recommended to remove the infection at the tip of the root and help the area heal.

This procedure can also help us address issues that don’t always show clearly on standard x-rays, such as tiny fractures, hidden canals, or inflammation near the root tip.

What is an apicoectomy?

An apicoectomy is a precise procedure where we access the root tip through the gum, remove the inflamed or infected tissue, and seal the end of the root to prevent reinfection. The area then heals naturally over time.

Most patients are surprised by how straightforward it feels—and how quickly they can get back to normal.

What should I expect after an apicoectomy?

It’s normal to have mild soreness or swelling for a few days as the tissue heals. We’ll give you clear aftercare instructions and recommend appropriate medication to keep you comfortable.

When Surgery Is the Best Path Forward

If a root canal alone isn’t enough to save your tooth, an apicoectomy may be the best next step. Dr. Read and Dr. MacDonald use this targeted technique to remove infected tissue, seal the root, and support long-term healing—so you can keep your natural tooth whenever possible.
